HVAC equipment can experience a wide range of issues that prevent it from operating like it should. In some cases, the problem can be traced back to incorrect installation, leading to duct leaks and related hassles. Low refrigerant levels—often due to an undetected leak—will prevent the equipment from cooling the room properly. Dirty filters may result in compressor damage. Long-term usage often causes wire corrosion. No matter what the issue may be, our team will find the cause and perform all necessary repairs.

7 DIY Fixes for a Broken AC

Have you tried these simple hacks for an AC that’s not working? One of them might be just the quick trick you need to get the cool air flowing again.

  1. Change the filter:

If your AC unit is tucked away in a closet somewhere in your home, it’s easy to forget there’s a filter in there that needs replacing. Take a quick peek and you may be surprised to discover that thing is ripe for a switchout. How to tell? If it looks dirty, it is dirty. Get a fresh one and let your unit breathe again.

  1. Check the settings on your thermostat:

You never know — the settings may have changed. Thanks to carelessness, AC wars or an absent-minded moment, somehow your thermostat got set to OFF or HEAT. Check it make sure all systems are “go” for COOL. Set the temperature to be several degrees cooler than the current room temperature.

It’s one of the easiest fixes for a “broken AC” for a problem that happens all the time!

  1. Peek inside the electrical panel of your home:

If you live in a newer home, this will be easy. Checking the circuit breaker of your AC unit might be a simple matter of opening the gray door that’s right next to your thermostat. Look inside and if the switch that’s labeled “AC” is tripped, flip it off and then back on. How to know it’s tripped? It will stick out like a sore thumb because the switch is opposite from all the others.

Sometimes this gets things rolling again but if the breaker trips again, there’s some other issue going on (like a short in the system!). If that’s the case, you’ve moved beyond DIY solutions and it’s time to call in a professional.

  1. The compressor got turned off:

Typically, there’s a gray metal box mounted near your compressor. That’s the 240-volt disconnect mechanism. For whatever reason, sometimes people shut theirs off and it needs to be turned back on.

  1. The outdoor compressor needs attention:

If your condenser unit is located outdoors, the problem could be caused by the elements of nature. Make sure there’s no overgrown vegetation blocking the unit and restricting the flow of air.

There’s also fan inside the unit. If you’re handy and confident in your abilities to be very careful not to mess up the electrical wires, you can remove the unit’s cover and clean the blades of that fan. If you’d rather have a professional do it, that’s understandable. Most people do!

How to Know When your AC is About to Fail

Do you know the signs of an ailing A/C system?

Sometimes you can prevent a total AC breakdown if you know what to look for.

  • Small puddles appear near your unit. Moisture near your unit is not a good thing. It could be a maintenance issue or it could mean there’s a leak. If you’ve gone through the DIY checklist above and you’re still seeing moisture or puddles, get it checked out. It could be some really toxic stuff. It could be a refrigerant leak, which is no fun. It’s bad for your unit, bad for your family and your pets, and bad for the environment.
  • The air just doesn’t seem that refreshing anymore.  Sometimes, AC units keep working but they’re not performing well. There could be any number of reasons for this but if you feel you’re not getting optimal performance — instant, cool air that puts a refreshing chill in the air— there could be a complete breakdown on the horizon. Maybe it’s electronic control board or maybe it’s something else. Either way, get it checked out before you lose cooling power altogether.
  • It smells weird when you run your AC. You may have a filter problem but strange smells can also result from an electrical component that’s about to overheat (or is already doing so!). That’s a safety issue that you should address right away.
  • Your AC sounds like an old steam engine. If cooling your home also means putting up with a series of strange noises, look into it. It could be the motor on your fan or it could be a loose belt. These and any other behind-the-scenes problems need immediate attention.

Knowing the signs of a problem and fixing them before your unit breaks can save you a bundle. Kaiser has cost-saving maintenance programs for every type of system, residential or commercial.*
